The "On the Edge of the Empire - ENCOUNTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY" is an International Festival of
SF & F which has been held annually in Cascais since 1996. It includes various activities, ranging from
conferences and round tables, book launches, short story and poster competitions, the publishing of books, the
divulging of new technologies, an SF & F book fair, exhibitions, shows and more.
We have had the participation of renowned names in the field of science and literature, of Portuguese and many
foreign authors - some of the most well-known names within international SF & F have been our guests, such as Brian
Aldiss, Joan D. Vinge, Brian Stableford, Christopher Priest, Robert Holdstock, Gwyneth Jones, Stephen Baxter and
Norman Sprinrad, to mention but a few. We have regularly achieved favorable mentions and critiques in the most
important magazines within this field, such as in LOCUS in the USA and INTERZONE in the UK, the publishers of which
have also been our guests.
For this year we can count upon the presence of three renowned authors: Geoff Ryman, Robert Holdstock. And Garry
Kilworth.
John Clute, the editor of "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" and "The Encyclopedia of
Fantasy", has also confirmed his presence.
